The pituitary gland : TSH : T3 & T4
Let me start by stating that the pituitary gland is referred to as the ‘master gland’. The thyroid gland is not the ‘master gland’.
The hormones secreted by the pituitary gland are:
- Prolactin
- Growth hormone (GH)
- Adrenocorticotropin (ACTH)
- Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
- Luteinizing hormone (LH)
- Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
- Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
- Oxytocin
The pituitary gland is not responsible for producing T4 or T3 (those come from the thyroid gland! or pills, if you are without a thyroid).
The pituitary gland is not responsible for converting T4 to T3.

Here is a quick description of the role of the pituitary gland:
The pituitary gland is often dubbed the “master gland” because its hormones control other parts of the endocrine system, namely the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, ovaries, and testes. However, the pituitary doesn’t entirely run the show.
In some cases, the hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland to stimulate or inhibit hormone production. Essentially, the pituitary acts after the hypothalamus prompts it.
